2013 // Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Now this one? This was the easiest choice on this list. Full stop.
I love character action games. I love Metal Gear. I love PlatinumGames. I never thought for a second that these 3 things would ever cross paths – let alone birth one of my all-time favorite games, not just in the genre – but in gaming as a whole.
Is it perfect? No. As a Metal Gear, it feels a bit weird. A bit too cartoony to be set in the same universe. But does that matter? Not in the least. I’m not one of those fans that hates anything that doesn’t strictly adhere to set canon, or tries new things in the franchise. I embrace that (Metal Gear AC!D 2 is one of my favorite Metal Gear titles. As is Ghost Babel.)
Would I have liked to see Kojima Productions more serious approach to a cyborg ninja stealth game running on the beautiful Fox Engine? Certainly – but for whatever reason, they couldn’t get it to work. So, rather than scrap the whole thing – they turned to a developer that specialized in character action and what we got was a glorious, insane and absolutely ridiculous party of a game.
I don’t know how much of the game’s story was Platinum or KojiPro – but whatever the percentages, it was 100% fun and goofy and I loved every second of it. Raiden dressing in a cheap dollar store Mariachi costume to try and “blend in” while on a mission in Mexico…which was underground, so no one was going to see him anyway is the exact kind of stupidity that gives me life.
It honestly makes me sad that we may never get a second game.
